At the scenic Waterfront Kuching, the three-day International Dragon Boat Regatta Race has concluded as a central part of the ongoing Sarawak Regatta celebrations.
This event has demonstrated the international appeal of traditional water sports and cultural celebrations with the participation from 60 teams representing 20 countries.
The regatta was organised by the Kuching ‘Residen’ Office and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP).
The race has taken its place alongside a range of activities during the Sarawak Regatta, including the Sarawak Kitchen Festival, Borneo Textile Craft Sale, cultural performances, and the Sarawak Malay Drum Competition.

Regattas in Sarawak have a rich history, dating back to 1872 during the James Brooke era. Initially, these events aimed to resolve intertribal conflicts and reduce the prevalence of headhunting among local tribes.
James Brooke, the ruler of Sarawak, ingeniously diverted their competitive spirits into boat races, enabling them to prove their prowess and strength in a safer and more constructive manner. This shift in tradition played a pivotal role in establishing lasting peace in the region.
