Sabah’s golf courses are gaining traction among Korean golf enthusiasts due to their strategic accessibility, according to South Korean consulate-general Joo Jung-cheol.

Malaysia, particularly Sabah, is rising in popularity as the third-favoured golfing destination for Koreans, following Thailand and the Philippines.

Sabah as premier golfing destination

Joo highlighted the strategic positioning of golf courses such as Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club, Sabah Golf and Country Club, Karambunai Golf and Country Club, and Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club.

These courses, located within a 30-minute drive from Kota Kinabalu’s city centre, serve as a compelling selling point for Korean golfers.

Joo mentioned Sabah’s potential to attract many Koreans, especially during the high season between December and February, offering a unique blend of winter vacation and golfing experiences.

In 2019, 480,000 Koreans visited Sabah, with over 20% engaging in golf-related activities.

Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai reiterated the state’s commitment to promoting golf tourism as a niche market.

Emphasising the affordability of golf packages without compromising on quality, he anticipates the continued attraction of Korean tourists, who currently dominate Sabah’s tourist market.

As major companies like SK Nexilis contribute to Sabah’s investment landscape, there’s an expectation of spillover effects, further solidifying Sabah’s position as a premier golfing destination in Asia.
