Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is gearing up for the northeast monsoon, implementing measures to safeguard hydroelectric dams in Cameron Highlands, Sungai Perak, and Tasik Kenyir.
TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) Managing Director Muhamad Nazri Pazil highlighted the preparation efforts, emphasising the dams’ capacity to handle increased water levels expected during the rainy season.
Beyond compliance with guidelines, regular inspections and integrity audits exceed safety standards, ensuring dam safety and structural integrity.
Comprehensive steps taken by TNB
Muhamad Nazri Pazil outlined the comprehensive steps taken by TNB to fortify dam safety in anticipation of the northeast monsoon.
Monthly inspections and semi-annual integrity audits, surpassing Malaysia Dam Safety Management Guidelines (MyDAMS), are integral components of this proactive approach.
Beyond their role in electricity generation, TNB’s hydro dams act as flood mitigators, capable of holding upstream water to prevent downstream disasters during the monsoon season.
Critical to dam functionality is the gradual reduction of water levels, adhering to established procedures for controlled water release before the monsoon onset.
This strategic approach ensures the dams continue their dual role effectively—generating electricity and facilitating flood mitigation.
The emphasis on prudent and comprehensive dam maintenance aligns with the core principle of safeguarding life, property, and the environment.
Ensuring infrastructure and communities are prepared
TNB’s commitment to safety extends beyond physical preparations to include stakeholder and community readiness.
Briefings have been conducted for stakeholders and residents in the vicinity, keeping them informed and prepared.
Emergency simulation exercises have been carried out in collaboration with relevant agencies like the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and District and State Disaster Management Committees.
These proactive initiatives underscore TNB’s dedication to holistic safety measures, ensuring that both infrastructure and communities are prepared for any potential challenges during the northeast monsoon.
TNB Genco, as a wholly owned subsidiary of TNB, holds a pivotal role in managing the electricity generation assets, primarily hydroelectric dams.
The subsidiary actively identifies potential risks through surveillance, monitors performance, and conducts special inspections, prioritising the ongoing safety and reliability of the dams.
The combination of stringent inspections, proactive measures, and community engagement positions TNB to navigate the challenges posed by the monsoon effectively.
The readiness demonstrated by TNB, encompassing both infrastructure and community preparedness, aligns with the organisation’s dedication to upholding safety standards and ensuring the well-being of all stakeholders.
