Capital A Executive Chairman, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, expressed gratitude, stating that Datuk Irene’s collaborative spirit was pivotal in establishing AirAsia’s Kota Kinabalu hub. The tribute livery stands as a sincere acknowledgment of her vital role in the airline’s journey.

From support to success of AirAsia

AirAsia’s journey with Sabah began in 2002 when Kota Kinabalu was established as a hub with the support of Datuk Irene and the Sabah Tourism Board.

Over the years, Kota Kinabalu has grown to become AirAsia’s second-largest hub after Kuala Lumpur. The airline now operates 21 routes, including domestic and international destinations, with 331 weekly flights from Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, and Tawau.

CEO Tony Fernandes highlighted Sabah’s significance to AirAsia, expressing gratitude for the undivided support received. He reminisced about Datuk Irene’s pivotal role in establishing Sabah as a hub and the airline’s exponential growth in the region.
