The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) is elated on the sucess of its first-ever Intervarsity Debate Competition, held from December 1 to 3, 2023.
This initiative aimed to instil a renewed sense of environmental awareness among university students and the broader community.
MTC fostering environmental consciousness
The Preliminary Rounds was hosted at the University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and the Grand Final at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology.
The debate attracted participants from 12 universities, the event showcased significant interest from higher educational institutions.
In collaboration with Majlis Debat Universiti Malaysia (MADUM) and the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, MTC ensured a comprehensive experience.
The competition, themed “The Usage of Timber and Its Impact on the Environment,” sparked enthusiasm among students, fostering intellectual fervour as they delved into discussions on timber’s green credentials.
Enriching collaborations with youthful perspective
MTC’s strategic collaboration with MADUM and the Department of Higher Education highlighted the commitment to providing an enriching experience for participants.
This collaboration aimed to instil the significance of timber as a sustainable resource and encourage the younger generation to perceive it as a valuable partner in creating a sustainable future.
The competition brought together 16 teams from various universities, each advancing to the Preliminary Round.
MTC’s Board of Trustees and CEO, Noraihan Abdul Rahman, were present, emphasising the pivotal role of today’s youth in shaping a future marked by environmental responsibility.
Noraihan expressed, “Today’s youth play a pivotal role in shaping the future, particularly in the context of environmental responsibility and our goal also extends beyond this competition.”
She added that the MTC Intervarsity Debate Competition serves as a catalyst for academic advocacy, exploring the advantages and challenges associated with timber use and its pivotal role in creating a greener world.
