Penang barber wins Asia’s Outstanding Barber Award

Fifty-year-old barber S. Singgara Vello’s dedication to his craft and the community has been recognized with the prestigious Asia’s Outstanding Barber Award.

This is not his first accolade, as he previously received the Asia’s Outstanding Saloon Award in 2020/2021.

From humble beginnings to award-winning barber

Singgara Vello’s journey to success has been anything but easy. He dropped out of school in Standard Five due to financial constraints and started working at the age of 15. Despite the challenges, he persevered and eventually became a barber in 2003.

With the support of his late father-in-law, a part-time barber, Singgara Vello opened his first barber shop, Mas Mithra Hair Studio, in 2003. In 2015, he expanded his business by opening Verlarz Classic Barber Shop in Lebuh Ah Quee, Penang.

Singgara Vello is not only passionate about his craft but also dedicated to giving back to the community. Since 2017, he has trained nearly 25 teenagers in the barbering trade, providing them with free training and the opportunity to develop valuable skills.

Giving back to the community

Singgara Vello’s goal is to open a hairdressing academy in 2024 to offer additional career opportunities for disadvantaged youth, school dropouts, and those facing financial difficulties. He is currently seeking funding and a suitable location to make this dream a reality.

Beyond his barbering and philanthropic endeavors, Singgara Vello is also actively involved in charitable work through an NGO he founded. He is also dedicated athlete and was crowned Mr. Penang in 2014.
