Nga announced that the selected location for the project has been identified, and the multi-storey car park is projected to cost approximately RM13 million.

The facility is designed to include four or five levels of parking, providing a total capacity of up to 400 parking lots.

This initiative is set to significantly enhance parking availability, offering a total of 800 parking spaces to ease the strain on Ipoh Old Town’s current infrastructure.

Parking poses a persistent challenge in Ipoh Old Town, particularly on weekends. The area, situated just across from the renowned colonial-era train station, bustles with activity as both local and international tourists explore its attractions.

During a press conference following the pre-launch of the ‘Rediscover Ipoh Oldtown’ map at Jalan Market, Nga highlighted the importance of addressing traffic congestion in the area.

The Ipoh City Council (MBI) conducted a comprehensive study to formulate effective solutions to the growing traffic challenges, culminating in the decision to construct the multi-storey car park.

Emphasising the significance of heritage preservation, Nga affirmed that the development would prioritise the conservation of Ipoh Old Town’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Having been designated a heritage area, any developmental activities will adhere to strict guidelines to ensure the preservation of the town’s unique charm and character.

Following its recognition as the 6th best city to visit by Lonely Planet, Ipoh has witnessed an influx of tourists, drawn to Old Town’s vintage cafes, vibrant street art, and delectable cuisine.

The narrow Panglima Lane, also known as Concubine Lane, experiences congestion as tourists flock to the area, creating a demand for suitable parking facilities.

Old Town, though compact, offers a charming experience that can be traversed on foot in approximately 15 minutes.

Comprising three main parallel roads intersected by side streets at right angles, the main entrance lies in Little India, while the vicinity around Standard Chartered Bank serves as the financial hub of Ipoh.

Ipoh Old Town, situated to the west of the Kinta River, holds a rich historical significance, dating back to the 1820s. Over the years, it has evolved from a modest village into one of Malaysia’s key cities, largely owing to the booming tin mining industry.
