Melaka, the UNESCO World Heritage city, is set to elevate its visitor experience with a significant extension of its car-free zone initiative.
Starting from December 22, 2023, the historical heart of Melaka will transform into a pedestrian paradise, offering over 50 hours of car-free exploration every weekend.
Ample time for tourists
Previously limited to Saturday evenings, the MBMB city council has expanded the car-free zone initiative to commence from Friday evening and last until Sunday midnight.
This extension provides ample time for tourists to immerse themselves in the city’s history, explore iconic landmarks like St Francis Xavier Church, Christ Church, Stadthuys, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of Jonker Walk and Jonker Street Night Market.
Major thoroughfares, including Jalan Istana, Jalan Mahkamah, Jalan Gereja, Lorong Gereja, Jalan Laksamana, and parts of Jalan Tun Khalil Yaakob and Jalan Merdeka, are now included in the extended car-free zone.
This ensures that visitors can enjoy Melaka’s historic charm without the interruption of vehicular traffic.
Immersive experience in Melaka
Tourists are encouraged to plan their travel itineraries to make the most of this extension, promising a unique opportunity to experience the city’s cultural offerings intimately.
From riverside views to local cuisine sampling and shopping for artisanal crafts, the car-free zone initiative invites a relaxed and immersive experience for all.
For those arriving by car, understanding the traffic changes during these times is crucial. Several parking areas close to the car-free zone provide convenient access to the pedestrian streets, ensuring a hassle-free visit for tourists.
As Melaka continues its commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation, initiatives like the extended car-free zone not only enhance the tourist experience but also contribute to the protection of the city’s rich heritage for future generations.
Plan a visit to Melaka and take a leisurely stroll through the annals of history, now with more time and space to truly appreciate the timeless allure of this historic city.
