Hospital Lam Wah Ee‘s (HLWE) Volunteer’s Club marked its 20th anniversary with a special holiday camp for children aged 7 to 12.
Themed “Kindness, Beauty, and Truth,” the camp aimed to create an inclusive and vibrant space for children to explore and embody these core values.
A decade of community service
Soo Siew Bee, Chairperson of HLWE’s Volunteer’s Club and Chief Clinical Psychologist, reiterated the club’s dedication to community service, stating, “We believe in giving back to the community and making a difference.
As the Volunteer Club celebrates its 20th anniversary, we have chosen to mark this milestone in a special and meaningful way, aiming to instil purpose in the younger generation.”
“Over the past 20 years, we have actively participated in local community services, driven by a mission to provide a platform for people to cultivate kindness and foster connections.”
We also aspire to optimise human experiences by creating awareness about kindness and serving
others,” explained Soo Siew Bee,
The Volunteer’s Club has consistently participated in diverse community outreach programs. These initiatives encompass fundraising for the underprivileged, organising food banks, participating in beach clean-ups, offering free health screenings in Tasek Banting, and visiting homes and orphanages, among various other activities.
HLWE volunteers inspiring young minds
Inspired by Albert Einstein’s words on kindness, beauty, and truth, the Volunteer’s Club aimed to instil these values in the younger generation through the holiday camp.
Soo mentioned, “We hope that through this camp, we are able to plant the seeds of the power in kindness, diversity in beauty, and courage in truth in the children.”
The camp featured activities such as Circle Time, Wet on Wet Painting, Weaving and Origami, Music Percussion, Drama, and Storytelling Time.
Tiffanie Tan, the camp facilitator, highlighted that the activities were designed to facilitate therapeutic effects for the children. Fourteen volunteers from HLWE, comprising various roles within the hospital, joined in to support the initiative.
The holiday camp, held on December 17th, 2023, hosted thirty children from Crystal Family Home Penang, Home of Home, Pusat Jagaan Rumah Charis, Sam Cheng Everloving Care Welfare Society and Pusat Jagaan Nasyiatul Aisyiyah.
Soo emphasised the importance of the camp in providing an opportunity for children from diverse backgrounds to interact and engage. She observed that the camp contributed positively to the children’s general mental well-being.
She also encouraged people to undergo Psychological Wellness Screening and Cognitive Screening Tests offered by HLWE to assess their mental and cognitive health.
