Medan Samudera traders takes center stage in car-free zone

Following a positive meeting with the Historical Melaka City Council, Medan Samudera traders gain permission to operate outside during Car-Free Zone days

Following a direct meeting between Medan Samudera traders and the Historical Melaka City Council (MBMB), a mutually advantageous agreement allows traders to operate outside their premises during Melaka’s Car-Free Zone days.

Melaka Hari Ini reported that Datuk Shadan Othman, the MBMB Mayor, confirmed the participation of almost 30 Medan Samudera traders in the meeting.

Traders get green light for car-free zone business

Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman highlighted the favourable results of the meeting, affirming, “Following the discussion, MBMB has authorised traders to operate outside their premises on Car-Free Zone days, provided they comply with a specified business concept.”

Shadan clarified that almost 30 Medan Samudera traders participated in the meeting, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the State Government’s goals.

Stressing the significance of adhering to the proposed business concept, he particularly highlighted its relevance for trading outside the premises within the designated area of Banda Hilir.

Medan Samudera embraces new opportunity

After the Nusantara Drum Festival press conference, Shadan detailed the business concept, urging traders to meet MBMB and propose innovative ideas for setting up roadside stalls.

The conceptualisation includes aspects such as cleanliness, uniformity, and orderliness, as communicated by MBMB.

Shadan pointed out that this initiative not only ensures a more organised trading environment but also offers economic benefits to Medan Samudera traders during the implementation of the Car-Free Zone every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

He also highlighted the significance of the Car-Free Zone in attracting over 18,000 visitors to Banda Hilir, with more than 40,000 vehicles entering Melaka weekly.

Resolving previous issues with traders at the Red Building, he expressed hope for Medan Samudera traders to actively participate in receiving economic benefits while contributing to the preservation of historical building structures.

The agreement signifies a positive step towards fostering collaboration between traders and MBMB, ensuring a harmonious coexistence within the historical and cultural landscape of Melaka.
