More than 3,000 participants are set to partake in the grand Wangkang procession on Friday, January 11, marking the commencement of Visit Melaka Year 2024.
The procession, featuring the majestic Wangkang barge, promises to be a spectacular curtain-raiser to the religious segment of the upcoming year-long celebration.
Wangkang celebrates Baba Nyonya heritage
Datuk Ronald Gan, President of the Malaysian Peranakan Baba Nyonya Association, highlighted the significance of the Wangkang Procession, stating that it is rooted in the original traditions of the Baba and Nyonya community from the Fujian region of China.
“The parade symbolizes elements of goodness and unity and will involve over 43 groups,” he said.
The main attraction is the Wangkang boat named KR Kapal Raja Perpaduan Aman, measuring almost five meters, accompanied by two replica ships, marching for nearly 9.5 kilometres.
“The parade will start at 8:30 am from the Wangkang Museum in Melaka, covering various routes, and is expected to involve about 22 stops, symbolising the invitation of wandering spirits to board the Wangkang boat before being sent to the other realm,” explained Gan.
Tradition seeks to bridge generations
Gan outlined the evening ceremony, which will continue with a procession to Pulau Melaka. The Melaka Gateway site will be the location for burning the replica ship, symbolising the dispatch of spirits.
He emphasised that the Wangkang Parade, listed as an Intangible Heritage by UNESCO, needs expansion to ensure the exposure of Baba and Nyonya community culture to younger generations.
He clarified that the ceremony is not an annual event but is held on specific dates. “Previously, this ceremony was held in 2020, and it is being organised again this year. It is expected to be held again in 2031,” he stated.
Wangkang, meaning “king ship” in Hokkien, holds historical traces from the days of the Malacca empire. Initially celebrated in 1845 in Melaka, this cultural heritage festival aims to summon evil spirits for the greater good, prosperity, and harmony of the community.
As a colourful parade filled with religious elements, the Wangkang Procession enriches the local art and culture of Melaka, becoming an integral part of the region’s heritage.
