The first stage of water supply recovery is in progress as scheduled, following planned works by the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and 22 other locations. Despite an unforeseen delay in emergency repair work at Sungai Perai, authorities remain confident that the situation will be resolved in a timely manner.
PBAPP successfully completed all planned water works ahead of schedule, allowing the commencement of Stage 1 water supply recovery at 11 pm on January 10, 2024. This initial phase aims to normalize water supply gradually for 197,025 consumers (33% of the 590,000 affected consumers) in Seberang Perai, with completion expected by 6:00 am on January 12, 2024.
Importantly, Stage 1 remains unaffected by the ongoing emergency repair work at Sungai Perai. The Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant is redirecting water through alternative pipelines, ensuring a steady water supply for Stage 1 recovery consumers.
Emergency Repair Work at Sungai Perai Faces Technical Challenge
While Stage 1 progresses, emergency repair work at Sungai Perai faced a setback due to a technical issue. A custom-fabricated clamp designed to cover a 1.35m long hole on the pipeline could not be fitted properly, leading to the postponement of dive operations.
To address the issue promptly, a heavy crane was deployed to lift the ill-fitting clamp for on-site modification. The commercial dive team is scheduled to lock the modified clamp in place today, providing an efficient solution with minimal risk of prolonged delays.
Contingent on Sungai Perai Repairs
Looking ahead, Stage 2 water supply recovery is scheduled to begin at 6:01 am on January 12, 2024. This phase aims to normalize water supply for 495,065 consumers (84% of the 590,000 affected consumers) in Seberang Perai and on Penang Island. The success of Stage 2 depends on the re-commissioning of the damaged section of the Sungai Perai underwater pipeline.
PBAPP emphasizes the critical nature of completing emergency repair works at Sungai Perai promptly. The damaged section, part of the 1.35m diameter pipeline, plays a vital role in channeling water from the Sungai Dua WTP to Penang Island. Regular updates on the progress of repair work will be provided to keep the public informed.
As the situation develops, PBAPP remains committed to ensuring the swift restoration of water supply services for all affected consumers.
