The road closure period for Banda Hilir Vehicle-Free Zone in Melaka will now be reduced to 21 hours, easing the impact on traders.

In a move to mitigate the impact on local businesses, the Melaka state government announces a reduction in the closure duration of roads for the Vehicle-Free Zone in Banda Hilir.

The road closure period will now be shortened to 21 hours, from the previous 54 hours, starting next Friday until the end of February 2024.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh highlighted the changes, stating, “The days remain the same, namely every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but the road closure period is shortened from 6 pm to 1 am only.”

This decision comes after considering the feedback from affected traders during the trial period.

“Previously, during the trial period, we implemented 24 hours, including daytime, but after taking into account the voices of affected traders, we shortened the road closure time,” he explained during a press conference.

Ab Rauf further explained that the state government is actively reviewing the best approach for the Vehicle-Free Zone’s implementation.

He assured that the restructuring period until the end of February aims to avoid disrupting business affairs in the area.

“The restructuring period for special consideration until the end of February, we do not want to disrupt business affairs in this area.

This is also to conduct a new study in the affected areas before making new decisions,” he added.

The reassurance from the Melaka state government comes in response to concerns from traders affected by the newly implemented three-day vehicle-free zone around Banda Hilir.

Earlier, Ab Rauf Yusoh clarified the government’s intentions, stating, “We have never intended to penalise traders around Banda Hilir who are affected by the road closures.”

The ongoing trial period allows for a detailed study, focusing on various aspects, particularly traffic dispersal, to ensure smooth vehicle movement in and out of the area.

As Melaka continues its efforts to enhance tourism, the state government remains mindful of the needs and concerns of local businesses, striking a balance between promoting tourism and supporting the community.
