In a strategic move towards environmental sustainability, the Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB) has collaborated with experts to develop the ‘Environment Sensor Station-15’ (ESS-15).

MBMB Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman highlighted the significance of ESS-15, covering locations in 14 state constituencies within the council’s administrative area.

The project is a collaborative effort involving Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), MRL Engineering Sdn Bhd, Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), and Universiti Malaya (UM).

“This ESS-15 can record various data for air quality analysis such as temperature, carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2), air humidity, rainfall, noise, wind speed and direction,” said Shadan.

The mayor also stressed the importance of adhering to international air quality standards.

The benchmarks include criteria from the European Union (EU), the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA), the World Health Organisation (WHO), and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management). This comprehensive approach covers air quality, water, and waste management.

“This initiative aligns with our commitment to creating a sustainable environment and ensuring the well-being of our citizens. Monitoring air quality is a crucial step towards achieving the goal of a ‘Clean Air Zone’ in Melaka,” he added.

The launch of ESS-15 and the ‘Melaka Touch Point’ signifies Melaka’s commitment to becoming a smart and environmentally conscious city.

The Melaka Touch Point Kiosk offers a wealth of information, including MBMB i-Traffic data, MBMB Smart City updates, Melaka History, MBMB i-Procurement, and innovative projects like the Smart Online Warning Project.

Shadan also highlighted the success of the MBMB i-Traffic application, accessed by over 74,000 users since its launch in September 2022. The kiosk extends the accessibility of this application, providing road users with real-time information on alternative routes during congestion.

With the integration of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) in the i-Traffic system, Melaka is taking a significant leap towards creating a smart city that prioritises environmental sustainability and enhances the overall quality of life for its residents.
