As the auspicious Year of the Dragon approaches, the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is set to celebrate the Chinese New Year by featuring the iconic Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta (SIDBR) in its 2024 Ang Pao packet design.

The Ang Pao packets, traditionally distributed during Chinese New Year, aim to promote the annual Dragon Boat Race Festival held on the Kuching River in late October.

Chinese New Year festivities, commencing on February 10, will be accentuated by the distribution of Sarawak’s Ang Pao packets, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the SIDBR.

The dragon, symbolising strength, power, and good fortune in Chinese mythology, aligns seamlessly with the dragon boat race.

The SIDBR-inspired Ang Pao design symbolises the energetic and spirited essence of the dragon, encapsulating the camaraderie among rowers as they propel their boats forward.

Held annually at the end of October on the serene waters of the Sarawak River, the event attracts participants from around the world. The SIDBR 2023 witnessed a groundbreaking inclusion, as teams with members with physical disabilities participated for the first time.

During the recent SIDBR in October 2023, 60 teams from 20 countries, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Spain, Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia, showcased their rowing prowess.

The event emphasizes inclusivity by welcoming participants with diverse abilities, underlining the global appeal and recognition of the SIDBR.

As Sarawak prepares to welcome the Year of the Dragon, the STB’s initiative to feature the SIDBR in the 2024 Ang Pao design not only honours tradition but also invites a global audience to appreciate the rich cultural and sporting heritage of Sarawak.
