This groundbreaking initiative positions Malaysia as a prominent player in the global cruise industry and caters to the specific needs of the Muslim travel market.

Costa Cruises and Hwajing Travel & Tours, in a historic collaboration, have launched Malaysia’s first international cruise homeport at Port Klang.

This groundbreaking initiative positions Malaysia as a prominent player in the global cruise industry and caters to the specific needs of the Muslim travel market.

International cruise homeport launches

The Costa Serena, Costa Cruises’ flagship vessel since 2007, will redefine luxury cruising from Port Klang. The cruise liner boasts interiors reminiscent of an opulent Roman city, offering a unique and memorable experience for passengers.

Despite Malaysian ports not being traditional choices for international luxury cruises, the disruptions caused by the recent pandemic opened opportunities for Port Klang, with its infrastructure-ready harbours, to fill a niche in the industry.

Kenny Cheong, Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours, highlighted the collaboration’s strategic significance: “The strategic choice of Port Klang as Costa Serena’s homeport underscores Malaysia’s emergence as a maritime hub, poised to cater to a diverse international clientele.”

Costa Serena, stretching 290m in length and weighing approximately 115,000 tonnes, will accommodate up to 3,780 guests. The homeport at Port Klang is expected to bring economic benefits to various sectors, including accommodation, dining, transportation, and retail.

The launch ceremony represents a significant moment for Malaysia’s cruise industry, signalling a shift in perception and establishing Port Klang as an exciting new maritime hub.

Costa Serena offers first Halal cruise

Costa Cruises and Hwajing aim to explore the untapped Muslim travel market through customised services. This includes elements of leisure, charity, and Halalan Toyyiban, providing an inclusive experience for passengers.

The cruise experience will feature enriching Islamic lectures and workshops managed by Intratama Travel Consultant & Tours. Additionally, the culinary offerings will showcase a fusion of flavours, including 40% Asian fare.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, emphasised the economic impact of the initiative: “With the Halal Certification of the Costa Serena, it helps to establish Malaysia as a beacon for a culturally sensitive and comfortable cruise experience.

This goes beyond catering to the needs of the over 40% Muslim population in Southeast Asia but also signifies a strategic leap, positioning Malaysia as a global hub for inclusive travel experiences.”

Francesco Raffa, Director of Region and Growth Markets of Costa Cruises, commented on the collaboration: “This Costa Cruises and Hwajing partnership signifies a paradigm shift in travel. Port Klang as Costa Serena’s homeport is a resounding endorsement of Malaysia’s potential.

The overwhelming interest from travellers sets the stage for a new era of inclusive tourism. This collaboration promises a positive and promising trajectory for Malaysia’s cruise industry, reflecting a shift towards culturally sensitive and friendly travel experiences.”

The joint effort by Costa Cruises and Hwajing to establish Malaysia’s inaugural international cruise homeport promises enduring economic benefits and lasting advantages for the nation, marking a proud moment for the cruise industry in Malaysia.
