The Penang Lions Clubs, known for their community services, are set to join the state’s annual Miao Hui celebration for the second consecutive year alongside the Penang Chinese clans during the Chinese New Year.

District 308 B2 Governor Dr Alan Thoo led a delegation of 30 club presidents and officers to meet Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, expressing their commitment to cultural activities during the festive season.

Penang Lions club embraces diverse service roles

Penang hosts 45 Lions clubs with around 1,400 members, playing a vital role in various community projects.

Dr Thoo announced a collaboration with St John Ambulance Malaysia to donate an ambulance this year. Additionally, they plan to work with the Police to organise seminars on scam awareness in various factories.

Dr Thoo emphasised the diversity of their initiatives, stating, “Most of the time, people will not think Lions are involved in cultural activities. This is one of our initiatives.”

The Lions Clubs are also seeking support from the state government to allocate space for a food bank, showcasing their commitment to addressing societal needs beyond cultural involvement.

Tackling social needs, one project at a time

Chief Minister Chow commended the Penang Lions Clubs for their impactful community services and initiatives.

He acknowledged the lasting impression these activities have left on the community, including projects like building pedestrian bridges and installing signages.

Chow expressed the importance of collaboration with NGOs, stating, “In Penang, we are very blessed with a wide spectrum of NGOs, working in their special ways to impact the members and the society at large. The government cannot do everything.”

Chow highlighted the significant role played by voluntary fire and rescue brigades during events like water disruptions, showcasing the community’s proactive involvement in addressing challenges.

Chow expressed hope for the Lions Club members to continue their good works and contribute to the betterment of society. He addressed concerns about water security in the state, explaining the preparations and projects under the Penang Water Contingency Plan 2030 in response to a question.

The meeting concluded with Chow presenting awards from the District Governor to outstanding Lions Club members, recognizing their remarkable services.

The collaboration between the Penang Lions Clubs and the state government reflects a proactive approach to community engagement and cultural involvement during festive celebrations.
