The 130-year-old Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang has once again mesmerized locals and tourists alike with its dazzling display of neon and LED lights, accompanied by thousands of Chinese lanterns.
The annual lighting-up ceremony, a prelude to the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration, transformed the temple into a vibrant spectacle.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow graced the event, highlighting its significance as one of Penang’s iconic CNY celebrations.
130 years of tradition: Kek Lok Si temple’s dazzling display
Against the night sky, the Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam became a beacon of festive cheer during its annual lighting-up ceremony.
Chow expressed admiration for the dedication and effort put into the event, acknowledging the challenges it entails.
He remarked, “It is not easy to hold this event yearly as apart from funding, it also requires manpower and energy.”
Chow commended the temple for consistently presenting unique decorations each year, making the ceremony a much-anticipated attraction for both domestic and international tourists.
The grand illumination, which will grace the temple from February 9 to March 7, unfolded after a prayer session.
The radiant display extended throughout the temple premises, casting a glow even up to the Kuan Yin Goddess of Mercy pavilion.
Chow underscored the cultural richness of the Air Itam area, emphasising the temple’s role as a vibrant symbol within this dynamic community.

During his speech, Chow acknowledged not only the cultural significance of the Kek Lok Si Temple but also its philanthropic endeavours.
He commended the temple’s charity work, specifically highlighting the establishment of the Kek Lok Si Charitable Hospital.
Chow expressed his hope for continued collaboration between the community, the temple, and the state government in enhancing Penang’s progress and beauty.
The event saw the presence of dignitaries, including state Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim.
Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, Paya Terubong assemblyman Wong Hon Wai, were among others.
The long list of dignitaries also includes Yayasan Kek Lok Si trustee and chairman Datuk Seri Venerable Seck Jit Heng.
In concluding his address, Chow expressed his optimism for the future of Penang. He called on everyone to work collaboratively with the state government in creating a more progressive and beautiful Penang.
The Kek Lok Si Temple’s annual lighting-up ceremony not only heralds the arrival of the Chinese New Year but also symbolises unity, cultural vibrancy, and a commitment to charitable initiatives in the heart of Penang.
