Penang police, led by state police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin, have initiated the 21st Op Selamat, focusing on monitoring traffic conditions in accident-prone and congested areas.
The launch took place at the Sungai Dua toll plaza, aiming to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow during the upcoming period.
Police to enhance patrols in accident hotspots
Addressing the launch, Khaw highlighted the Penang Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department’s (JSPT) commitment to intensify patrols in ‘hotspot’ and ‘blackspot’ locations.
These efforts aim to enhance police visibility and ensure road user safety, aligning with JSPT’s motto ‘Kehadiran JSPT Dirasai’.
Identified ‘blackspots’ include various areas across Penang, where accidents are frequent, signalling a proactive approach to accident prevention
Khaw provided insights into accident trends, citing a decrease in fatal accidents despite an overall increase in accident cases from 2022 to 2023.
Works Minister: Two days toll exemption for CNY
Meanwhile, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced a toll exemption for private vehicles during the Chinese New Year period.
This initiative, spanning two days from February 8 to February 9, 2024, aims to alleviate financial burdens and promote safe travel during the festive season.
Nanta emphasised the government’s commitment to prioritising citizens’ welfare by reducing living costs, with the toll exemption costing approximately RM42.99 million.
