Selangor takes bold steps towards climate resilience

Selangor leaders join experts in a forum discussing climate crisis solutions. Commitments made toward recycling and rainwater harvesting.

PJ Live Arts Hall, Jaya One Section 13, was abuzz with discussions and insights on climate change, environmental disasters, and mitigation strategies during the recent book launch and forum organized by Eco Lestari and Forum Selangor. The World Climate and Environment Forum, moderated by YB Jamaliah Jamaluddin, explored the pages of the newly launched books, “Malapetaka Iklim” (Climate Catastrophe) and “Ke Mana Hilangnya Katak Hijau” (Where is the Green Frog) while engaging in a comprehensive discussion on the current state of global warming.

The launch, graced by the Chief Minister of Selangor, YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, emphasized the state’s commitment to addressing environmental issues, with a particular focus on plastic waste recycling and rainwater harvesting. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished panelists, including Tn Charles Santiago, Chairman of Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN); Dr. Khamarrul Azahari Razak, Director of the Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Center at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM); Pn Hamizah Shamsudeen, Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaigner; and renowned author Hishamuddin Rais.

Selangor’s commitment to environmental initiatives

During the forum, YB Jamaliah highlighted the urgency of addressing the increasing frequency and intensity of environmental disasters in the country. The Chief Minister underscored the government’s commitment to involve all stakeholders in mitigating the impacts of climate change. Key points discussed included the transition of waste disposal methods from landfills to waste-to-energy (WTE), revitalizing recycling efforts, and promoting rainwater harvesting as a crucial adaptation measure for water crisis risks.

Yayasan Hijau Malaysia (YHM) proudly participated in the forum, represented by their Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muiz Murad. The foundation expressed eagerness to forge a strategic partnership with Selangor State, aligning their efforts with national and state sustainability goals.

In attendance were notable figures such as YB Puan Anfaal binti Saari, EXCO Pembangunan Wanita dan Kebajikan Masyarakat Selangor; YB Syed Ahmed, ADN Lembah Jaya; and authors Adi Satria Ahmad, Tn Heng Kiah Chun, Pn Mohala Santharamohana, and Pn Yip Sean Yi.

The forum and book launch were a commendable initiative, shedding light on the imperative need for collective efforts to combat climate change and fostering sustainable practices in Selangor and beyond.
