Since the implementation of visa-free travel between China and Malaysia in December 2023, online travel platform Agoda has witnessed a significant surge in travel searches between the two countries.

This trend highlights the growing interest in exploring each other’s cultural and scenic wonders, made easier by the relaxed travel requirements.

Five-fold increase in searches on Agoda

Agoda reported a five-fold increase in searches from China to Malaysia in the month following the visa waiver, followed by a three-fold increase in searches from Malaysia to mainland China in the same period.

This trend continued in January 2024, indicating sustained interest from both sides.

Chinese travelers showed particular interest in exploring Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Johor Bahru, and Langkawi in Malaysia, showcasing their diverse preferences.

Similarly, Malaysians reciprocated with curiosity towards China, with Guangzhou topping their list, followed by Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, and Chengdu.

Enric Casals, Associate Vice President Southeast Asia at Agoda, expressed enthusiasm about the increased travel activity.

He stated, “The diverse destinations gaining interest in both markets reflect the excitement among travellers to explore each other’s wonders.

We are happy to see travel becoming more seamless, and Agoda remains committed to providing cost-effective travel options regardless of visa requirements.”
