SMC named among top 250 hospitals globally

Sunway Medical Centre achieves historic milestone, ranking among the world’s top 250 hospitals in Newsweek 2024, a first for Malaysian healthcare

In a historic achievement for Malaysian healthcare, Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) has secured a coveted spot among the top 250 hospitals globally in the prestigious Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2024 rankings. The accolade marks the first time a Malaysian hospital has earned a place in this esteemed international listing.

Newsweek’s annual rankings aim to benchmark hospitals worldwide, evaluating their performance in clinical excellence, research, and innovation. The comprehensive assessment process involved a global survey conducted among doctors, healthcare professionals, and administrators across four continents. Additionally, data from patient surveys and hospital quality metrics contributed to the rigorous evaluation.

Out of 30 countries and 2,400 initially shortlisted hospitals, including public hospitals, university teaching hospitals, and private medical centers, only the top 250 were featured in the global listing. Sunway Medical Centre’s recognition places it alongside renowned institutions such as Mayo Clinic (USA), Singapore General Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (Australia), and The University of Tokyo Hospital (Japan).

Expressing gratitude for this international recognition, Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group, stated, “We are immensely honoured that SMC, though a relatively young hospital, is recognised among the world’s best hospitals.” He added, “This accomplishment is a testament to our commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare services.”

SMC’s journey to excellence

Established in 1999, Sunway Medical Centre stands as the largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, boasting 724 licensed beds and over 40 specialties. The hospital’s dedication to excellence is further affirmed by its accreditation from The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.

Dato’ Lau remarked, “This is a fitting way for us to celebrate our 25th anniversary this year, as we aim to further elevate our standards of care through patient-centred innovative treatments, digitalisation, and providing comprehensive clinical services.”

The recent global recognition follows SMC’s notable achievements, including being ranked as the top hospital for paediatrics in Malaysia and 28th in the Asia Pacific region in Newsweek’s Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific 2023. Sunway Medical Centre also secured positions within the top 75 hospitals globally in Neurology, Cardiology, and Oncology in the same survey.

Newsweek collaborated with Statista, Inc., a prominent global market research and consumer data firm, for the sixth consecutive year to conduct the assessments and rankings of the best hospitals worldwide. Sunway Medical Centre’s inclusion in the top 250 further underscores Malaysia’s growing prominence in the global healthcare landscape.
