The Kuching International Tattoo Expo 2024 is set to return, showcasing a vibrant fusion of international artistry and Sarawak’s rich tattoo culture.

The event, scheduled for April 5th to 7th at the Dewan Dayak Bidayuh National Association, boasts international recognition with confirmed participation from tattoo artists hailing from Holland, Sweden, India, and France.

This joint effort by Skrang Tattoo Studio and Inkzation Studio is supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture through the Heritage, Arts, and Cultural Facilitation Fund.

The expo will feature 45 booths showcasing the talents of these international artists alongside local participants.

A total of 12 tattoo competition categories will be judged by a distinguished panel based on motif selection, technical execution, and artistic creativity.

These judges have earned their acclaim through participation in international tattoo competitions and their own achievements within the tattooing industry.

Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Minister of Sarawak’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, addressed the press conference, expressing his hope that the expo will elevate public perception of tattooing as a legitimate art form.

He emphasised the rich tattoo heritage of Borneo, particularly amongst the Dayak people. The expo aims to promote tattoo art’s global significance while ensuring this cultural treasure remains vibrant for future generations.

The expo’s admission fee is RM15 per person, with organizers anticipating a turnout of 4,000 to 5,000 visitors.

Kuching Tattoo Expo 2024: Global ink meets local heritage

In a separate announcement, Sarawak’s Dion Das Louis, also known as “Little Borneo Birdie,” will represent Malaysia at the 27th World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2024.

Dion, a skilled performer of traditional Iban dances known as “ngajat,” will travel to Long Beach, California in June to compete in the championship held from June 28th to July 6th, 2024.

He earned his WCOPA spot after securing a gold medal at the Malaysian Performing Arts Championship 2024 held in Kuala Lumpur on January 27th.
