Early indicators suggest a surge in tourism for Melaka in the first quarter of 2024, coinciding with the state’s year-long tourism campaign, Visit Melaka Year (VMY2024).
Positive signs for Melaka tourism
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh highlighted a rise in utility bills at hotels, exceeding 35% compared to the same period last year.
This increase is seen as a strong indicator of higher hotel occupancy rates due to a rise in tourist arrivals.
Additionally, data shows a noticeable increase in the number of vehicles entering Melaka’s main entry points.
The Malaysian government’s decision to grant a 30-day visa-free entry for Chinese and Indian citizens starting December 1st, 2023, is believed to be contributing to the tourism boom.
Establishing Melaka as a Top Tourist Destination
VMY2024, running from January 1st to December 31st, 2024, carries the theme “Mana Lagi? Melaka Ler!” (Where Else? Melaka!).
This campaign aims to position Melaka as the premier tourist destination for visitors in 2024.
While exact tourist arrival figures are not yet available due to the recent timeframe, the early indicators suggest the campaign is achieving its goals.
The positive trends observed in the first quarter of 2024 bode well for Melaka’s tourism industry throughout the year.
The success of VMY2024 is expected to further solidify Melaka’s reputation as a must-visit destination in Malaysia.
