In conjunction with World Immunisation Week, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) convened a timely discussion on the evolving landscape of vaccines, their role in protecting older adults, and the socio-economic benefits of adult immunisation in Malaysia.

The event featured local and global experts sharing insights on adult vaccination. A key focus was placed on raising awareness of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) and their preventative options for adults in Malaysia.

Dr. Thanabalan Fonseka, Vaccines Medical Director of GSK Malaysia, highlighted the critical need for increased awareness: “While childhood immunisation programs are well-established, adult vaccination remains a challenge due to a lack of awareness about VPDs and their preventative measures.”

Addressing challenges and building value

Logistical hurdles like limited healthcare access and financial constraints further impede adult vaccination rates.

GSK emphasises the need to not only raise awareness but also to improve accessibility and underscore the importance of adult vaccines in ensuring lifelong protection against preventable diseases.

Dr. Fonseka stressed the need to move from “sick care” to preventative healthcare, promoting adult immunisation as a standard of care in Malaysia.

Adult vaccinations target various VPDs, including COVID-19, influenza, pneumococcal disease, shingles (herpes zoster), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The risk of contracting these illnesses increases with age due to a decline in immune function, underlying health conditions, and waning vaccine immunity over time.

While older adults are most susceptible, individuals with weakened immune systems, regardless of age, are also at higher risk.

GSK: Commitment to adult immunisation

During World Immunisation Week, GSK champions adult immunisation globally. Their aim is to raise awareness of the extensive health, structural, and socio-economic benefits associated with widespread adoption of adult vaccines.

In collaboration with industry stakeholders, GSK supports the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) in its mission to save lives through immunisation.

As Malaysia’s population ages, the importance of adult immunisation becomes even more critical. Ensuring proper vaccination safeguards the health of older adults, enabling them to remain active and contribute productively to society and the economy.

This not only enhances their quality of life but also reduces healthcare costs in the long run.

World Immunisation Week serves as a crucial reminder of the global impact of vaccination on health and socio-economic well-being.

By raising awareness and advocating for policy changes, Malaysia can work towards building healthier and more resilient communities, especially for its ageing population.
