2nd Lt. Chan Ming Youn: From accountant to commando

Second Lieutenant Chan Ming Youn of the Second Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (2 RRD) has achieved a significant milestone.

He became the only Chinese candidate to successfully complete the rigorous 12-week basic commando course AK/1/2024 series.

The 25-year-old was among nine officers and 60 other members of other ranks who were awarded green berets and commando knives during a parade to mark the end of their training at Bertutu Laut Beach in Sungai Udang in Melaka on Sunday (April 28).

Chan Ming Youn’s triumph

In a post on the Malaysian Army News Facebook page, Chan, who served as a member of the 515 Territorial Army, was quoted as saying that he was driven by interest in the military and was determined to serve the country.

“I didn’t even know anything about commandos, I started serving in 515 Territorial Army and from there I stepped into this military scene.

“My goal is to continue serving, to specialise, and hope to become a quality commando,” he said.

Chan Ming Youn, aged 25 and originating from Kuala Lumpur, holds a Bachelor of Accounting degree.

Dignified closing ceremony

The closing ceremony, overseen by Major General Adi Ridzwan Abdullah, Commander of the Special Operations Group (21 GGK), emphasised the significance of the green beret as a symbol of professionalism and competence for Special Forces Operators.

“Keep the dignity of this green beret from being tarnished with useless actions because it will later cost all the sacrifices of all those who have worked hard to get it.

It is very unfortunate if the green beret that is worn has to be stripped in a heinous manner due to misconduct such as disobeying instructions or committing acts contrary to service rules,” stated Adi.

Chan Ming Youn’s accomplishment serves as a testament to dedication and perseverance in military training, transcending barriers and exemplifying excellence.

As he joins the ranks of trained commandos, his commitment to serving the nation with distinction reflects the values upheld by the Malaysian Army.

The event was made even more special with the award presentation for the Best Student, which was granted to Lt M Ahmad Mujahid Siddiq Ahmad Rizal from the 23rd Royal Malay Regiment Battalion (23 RAMD).

The ceremony underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity and honour associated with the green beret, reminding all members of the Special Forces of their responsibility to uphold professionalism and discipline in their service to the country.
