Scoot, the low-cost carrier under Singapore Airlines, is set to broaden its footprint in the Malaysian aviation sector with plans to introduce flights to Subang Airport using its Embraer E190-E2 aircraft.

Leslie Thng, CEO of Scoot, revealed the airline’s interest in Subang Airport, pending the airport’s approval for jet operations.

Thng remarked, “Subang Airport is one that we would be interested in but it depends on when the airport is open for jet operations.”

He highlighted the current limitation to turboprop operations during a media briefing.

This development marks a significant shift since Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) became the primary hub for jet operations in 1998.

Thng underscored the importance of Malaysia as a strategic market for Scoot due to its geographical proximity to Singapore.

He stated, “Scoot has found that Malaysia is a valuable market because we are neighbours,” highlighting the airline’s decision to make Sibu its new Malaysian destination following the arrival of the first Embraer E190-E2 aircraft last month.

In addition to Subang Airport, Scoot aims to introduce flights to various destinations in Malaysia and beyond using the E190-E2 aircraft.

Thng elaborated on the airline’s expansion strategy, saying, “We chose to deploy the E2 there because we view Malaysia as a whole market.”

The planned destinations include Koh Samui, Miri, Kuantan, Hat Yai, and Krabi.

Scoot’s expansion plans are supported by its agreement with Florida-based aircraft lessor Azorra, through which the airline has ordered nine new Embraer E190-E2 commercial aircraft for delivery.

Presently, two of the nine aircraft have been delivered to Scoot, with the remaining three expected by the end of 2024 and the final delivery scheduled for 2025.

Scoot’s strategic move to leverage the capabilities of the Embraer E190-E2 aircraft reflects its commitment to enhancing connectivity and accessibility for travellers in the Malaysian region and beyond.
