SJKC Kuang Yu, a historic primary school in Penang, is undergoing a significant transformation.
The school is relocating from its current location in Kuala Muda to a brand new facility in Batu Kawan, embracing the concept of Industry 4.0 (IR4.0) for a future-oriented learning environment.
SJKC Kuang Yu: Modern facilities for a modern world
Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik, who serves as the school’s executive advisor, highlighted the school’s innovative design.
“The two-storey building will be designed with an IR4.0 concept, as the school operates within an Industry 4.0 ecosystem in Batu Kawan,” he explained.
This focus on technology is expected to attract students residing near the Penang Science Park and the Bukit Minyak Industrial Park.
“The facilities may differ from traditional schools,” Choon Aik elaborated, “focusing on science, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI), adopting a smart school setup.”
This shift towards a technology-driven curriculum positions SJKC Kuang Yu at the forefront of modern education.
Choon Aik emphasised the importance of establishing this new SJKC branch in Batu Kawan. “There is a gap in having an SJKC here,” he explained.
“The relocation of SJKC Kuang Yu is timely,” considering the presence of other educational institutions like SK Batu Kawan, SJKT Batu Kawan, SMK Batu Kawan, and universities in the vicinity.
Filling a gap in the educational landscape
The relocation of the 89-year-old school from Kuala Muda presents both challenges and opportunities.
The construction of the new school, estimated to cost RM22 million, has secured funding of around RM15 million so far.
Choon Aik expressed confidence that fundraising efforts will continue, paving the way for a completion date in early 2027.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow shed light on the rationale behind the relocation.
“The SJKC Kuang Yu, now located in Penaga, has only 27 pupils,” he said.
“Therefore, a decision was made to relocate the school.”
The Penang government and Penang Development Corporation (PDC) provided a six-acre plot of land designated for education purposes to facilitate this move.
Chow expressed optimism about the future of the school. “This marks the beginning of a new ecosystem to continue the school’s role,” he stated.
Choon Aik confirmed that upon successful relocation, the land and building in Penaga will be returned to the Penang government.
The potential for student enrolment at the new location is significant.
Choon Aik estimates that with Batu Kawan’s projected development, including approximately 30,000 housing units, SJKC Kuang Yu could potentially accommodate around 3,000 pupils – a tenfold increase from its current enrolment.
The groundbreaking ceremony also witnessed a significant contribution towards the school’s development. Eco Horizon Sdn Bhd donated RM500,000 to support the construction project.
This contribution signifies the community’s commitment to the school’s future.
