The Perak Fisheries Department (DOF) is reminding residents that permits is mandatory before releasing any fish, native or otherwise, into the state’s inland waters.
Earlier, the Perak Fisheries Department Director, Mohd Ghazali A Manap participated in the Fish Seed Release Program into Public Waters for the Perak Tengah District in 2024 at Kg. Bandar Tua, Kg. Gajah, Perak.
Permits required protecting local ecosystems
“These guidelines are in place to safeguard the delicate balance of our local freshwater fish populations,” emphasised Mohd Ghazali.
“Anyone planning to release fish fry, regardless of the species, must obtain our official permission beforehand.”
Applicants must visit the DOF office to explain the purpose of the release and the specific fish species involved.
“We take this matter very seriously,” stressed Director Manap, “as irresponsible releases can have detrimental effects on native fish populations.”
Viral video sparks reminder
This reminder comes in the wake of a viral video depicting the release of thousands of fish fry, believed to be African catfish, into Sungai Hulu Bernam, Tanjung Malim (Perak).
While the incident itself reportedly occurred in Selangor, the Perak DOF initially filed the complaint. “After further investigation,” clarified Director Manap,
“We determined that the location fell under Selangor’s jurisdiction. The Selangor DOF is now leading the investigation and any potential enforcement actions against the individuals involved.”
The Department of Fisheries, both in Perak and nationwide, is committed to protecting Malaysia’s valuable aquatic ecosystems.
Obtaining the necessary permits for fish releases ensures responsible practices that safeguard native fish populations and promote a healthy aquatic environment.
