Protect your car from theft: Keyless entry systems at risk

Car theft is on the rise, with vehicles using remote keyless entry and push-start mechanisms being particularly vulnerable.

According to the Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC), these thefts can occur in under 30 seconds using frequency hacking devices that compromise the key fob.

Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, VTREC coordinator, who recently spoke to The Star explained that thieves exploit the key fob, a small handheld remote control device that manages the remote keyless entry system.

Using a relay attack device, criminals intercept the key fob signals, deceiving the car’s system into recognising their device as the legitimate key fob.

“The process is relatively easy,” said Mas Tina, highlighting the growing concern over the simplicity and speed of such thefts.

A study conducted by VTREC in 2020 revealed that 20 vehicles are stolen daily, many through this method.

Keyless entry and push-start cars are prime targets because the devices used by thieves can pick up signals from several yards away.

Despite efforts by manufacturers to enhance security, these systems remain vulnerable.

To combat car theft, VTREC launched a nationwide public awareness campaign titled “United Against Vehicle Theft” in February.

The campaign aims to educate car owners about the risks and preventive measures they can take.

Here are some tips to protect your push-start car from theft:

  1. Disable Wireless Signal: Some key fobs allow you to turn off the wireless signal. Check your car’s manual or contact the manufacturer for guidance.
  2. Key Fob Placement: Keep your key fob away from doors and windows to prevent signal interception.
  3. Signal-Blocking Pouch: Use a pouch with a metallic liner to block the key fob signal.
  4. Mechanical Locks: Devices like steering wheel locks can deter thieves from driving away with your vehicle.
