Penang is gearing up for a vibrant Wesak Day celebration, a significant occasion for Buddhists that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha.
Organised by the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) and supported by the state government, the festivities will run from May 18th to 22nd, 2024.
Parade of faith and culture
The highlight of the celebration will be the Wesak Day procession on May 22nd.
Dato’ Loh Hock Hun, Chairman of the Penang Wesak Celebration Committee, acknowledges a decrease in participating floats compared to pre-pandemic years.
However, he emphasises the continued participation of various Buddhist organisations, with members joining the procession on foot.
This year’s theme, “Living Harmoniously, Thriving Society,” reflects the event’s aim to foster understanding and interaction between different faiths and ethnicities.
Beyond the Wesak Day parade
The festivities extend beyond the procession. Visitors can explore an exhibition on life preservation and environmental protection, or even participate in a recycled crafts workshop.
Separately, the Sian Chye Tong youth section will showcase a meticulously decorated 30-foot float during the parade.
Loh Choon Teik, the youth chairman, highlights the intricate details of the float, featuring artificial flowers, LED lighting, and symbolic elements like golden dragons and a rotating lotus flower.
Their dedication extends to charitable causes, with fundraising through lighting oil lamps and donations surpassing last year’s total.
Penang’s Wesak Day celebration offers a unique opportunity to experience Buddhist traditions and values.
From the vibrant parade to the educational exhibits, the event promises a meaningful and enriching experience for all visitors.
