Juneyao Airlines set to boost Penang tourism and trade

Penang is poised to welcome more Chinese visitors thanks to a new collaboration between Penang Global Tourism (PGT) and Juneyao Airlines.

The signing of a memorandum of collaboration (MoC) marks a significant step forward in expanding Penang’s international flight network and strengthening economic ties with China.

Enhanced connectivity and cross-promotion

Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), Wong Hon Wai, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential benefits.

“This agreement will pave the way for PGT and Juneyao Airlines to launch joint promotional campaigns,” he said.

These campaigns will showcase Penang’s rich cultural heritage, delectable cuisine, stunning beaches, and vibrant arts scene to a wider audience in China.

Wong highlighted the anticipated positive impact on Penang’s tourism industry.

“Cross-promotional activities will significantly benefit Penang,” he explained.

“Increased exposure through Juneyao Airlines’ extensive network and marketing channels will attract more visitors, particularly from China, to explore all that Penang has to offer.”

Juneyao Airlines direct flights and economic growth

The collaboration coincides with the recent launch of a new route between Shanghai and Penang on Juneyao Airlines.

The service begins with four flights per week, with a planned increase to daily flights starting later this month.

This route marks a milestone by providing the first direct connection between Shanghai and major Eastern Chinese cities with Penang.

It not only simplifies travel for Chinese tourists but also expands Penang’s overall international flight network.

“The increased tourist influx will lead to a flourishing tourism industry in Penang,” Wong added.

“This will have a ripple effect, driving growth in related sectors such as food and beverage, accommodation, and retail, ultimately contributing to the local economy’s strength.”

The signing ceremony was graced by His Excellency Zhou Youbin, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang, signifying the importance of this collaboration for both China and Penang.
