APU and Rumah Shalom unite for Ocean Guardians Beach Day

APU and Rumah Shalom Orphanage unite for “Ocean Guardians” ESG project, combining beach cleaning, sports, and creativity to foster environmental responsibility

In an inspiring display of environmental stewardship and community engagement, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) partnered with the youths of Rumah Shalom Orphanage for a unique Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiative aptly named “Ocean Guardians.” The event, brimming with laughter, teamwork, and a shared purpose, unfolded on the sun-kissed beaches of Port Dickson.

The project, steered by lecturers Ms. Harjinder Kaur and Mr. David Ng Kok Meng from APU’s School of Marketing and Management (SoMM), aimed to foster environmental awareness, teamwork, and creativity among the underprivileged youths.

Beach Cleaning: Learning Through Action

The day’s activities commenced with a beach cleaning drive. However, this was not a mere trash collection exercise. APU students turned the activity into a rich learning experience, engaging the youths in discussions about coastal conservation and the severe impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems. Armed with gloves, hats, and trash bags, the participants transformed into eco-warriors, tackling the litter-strewn beach with newfound enthusiasm and a deeper understanding of their environmental responsibility.

Volleyball Tournament: Fostering Team Spirit

Following the beach clean-up, the participants’ spirits remained high as they engaged in a friendly volleyball tournament. The air was filled with excitement as the youths showcased their teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. The competition was fierce yet friendly, with cheers erupting from the sidelines as points were scored. The tournament not only provided physical exercise but also taught valuable lessons in perseverance and the power of collaboration.

Sandcastle Building: Unleashing Creativity

The day culminated in a sandcastle-building competition, an activity designed to unleash creativity and promote problem-solving. Under the warm sun, the youths channeled their inner architects, crafting intricate sandcastles and relishing the collaborative process. The exercise provided a perfect end to the day, leaving the participants with a sense of accomplishment and the joy of creating something beautiful together.

Ms. Harjinder Kaur expressed her delight at the youths’ enthusiasm and their eager requests for more such outings. “They had a blast bonding with each other,” she shared. “These experiences are rare for them, and they were not just happy about the beach trip — it was their first time ever in Port Dickson! They truly appreciate the effort our university team put in.”

Mr. David Ng Kok Meng echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the broader impact of the project on youth development. “These activities are crucial for nurturing young minds,” he said. “Not only do they raise environmental awareness, but they also instil a sense of responsibility and community involvement. This project was not just about cleaning the beach; it was a step towards a more sustainable future for our oceans, and the youths were a vital part of it.”

The collaboration between APU and Rumah Shalom Orphanage not only made a tangible difference to the environment but also left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all participants. The “Ocean Guardians” project stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when educational institutions and community organizations join forces for a common cause.
