The Perak government will introduce a new local service charge of RM3 per room per night starting 1 January 2025.
This additional charge, stipulated under the Hotel Enactment 2023, was approved by the Perak State Legislative Assembly last year.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching announced this at a recent press conference.
“The implementation date for this charge has been postponed to January 2025 to appreciate the visitors during Visit Perak Year 2024,” Ng said.
The charge aims to enhance the quality of services at tourist locations in Perak.
Enhancing tourist experience in Perak
Ng stated that the additional charge is expected to significantly improve the services provided to tourists.
“This initiative will help the state government improve the quality of services, especially at various tourist locations in Perak,” she explained.
Similar charges have been implemented in other states under different names.
Perak Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee and Deputy State Secretary (Development) Halizah Sipun also attended the press conference.
Ng emphasised that the new charge is a step towards offering a better experience for tourists visiting Perak.
Standardisation of hotel licences
Starting from 1 July 2024, the standardisation of hotel licences under the Hotel Enactment 2023 will begin.
This requires all accommodation providers, including hotels, guesthouses, chalets, homestays, and houseboats, to obtain the relevant licence from local authorities before imposing the CPT on tourists.
“To provide sufficient time for engagement and education sessions with the target groups, the government has agreed to give one year until 30 June 2025.
During this period, we will only offer advice, and no fines will be imposed on operators who have yet to register and apply,” Ng stated.
She expressed hope that all operators would promptly submit their applications to streamline their business operations.
Ng urged accommodation operators to comply with the new regulations and obtain the necessary licences from local authorities.
“Although the enforcement of the licence has been postponed, the legal provisions stipulated in the enactment must still be adhered to,” she added.
The new charge and standardisation of hotel licences are part of the Perak government’s broader efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and services.
These measures aim to ensure that visitors enjoy a high-quality experience while supporting the local economy.
