Avenue K hosts art exhibition for special needs artists

From July 24th to August 11th, 2024, Avenue K Shopping Mall, Kuala Lumpur’s trendsetting urban destination, will host the ‘Sport My Art’ group art exhibition at Above @ Level 4. This event is more than just an art display; it is a celebration of creativity, diversity, and inclusivity. Avenue K has long been known for its innovative approach to the shopping experience, transforming it into an artistic and cultural journey.

The ‘Sport My Art’ exhibition is a testament to this ethos, featuring the works of 22 special needs and disabled artists. The event aims to provide these talented individuals with a platform to showcase their art, gain recognition, and promote a more inclusive community.

Rachel Er, Centre Manager at Avenue K Shopping Mall, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “By featuring their work in a mainstream venue, the exhibition promotes inclusivity within the art community, ensuring these artists have equal opportunities to present their work. It encourages broader societal inclusion, showing that people with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to cultural and artistic spheres.”

Artistic excellence beyond barriers

Curated by renowned artist Philip Wong, the exhibition showcases the dedication and unique styles of the participating artists. These individuals, hailing from diverse backgrounds and facing various physical, cognitive, and sensory challenges, have created stunning works that challenge perceptions and inspire viewers. The artists’ ability to communicate through their art despite their challenges underscores the exhibition’s theme of hope and determination.

Drawing inspiration from the Olympics, ‘Sport My Art’ uses the vibrant colors of the Olympic rings to convey energy and enthusiasm in the paintings. The exhibition parallels the spirit of sports and art, both of which have the power to inspire and unite people. It also pays tribute to Malaysia’s athletes competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics, honoring their achievements, sacrifices, and endurance.

Supporting financial independence through art

Unlike typical charity art exhibitions, ‘Sport My Art’ is unique in that 100% of the sale proceeds will go directly to the artists. This initiative supports their financial independence and allows them to continue their creative pursuits. The event not only provides a platform for recognition but also directly contributes to the livelihood and sustainability of the artists involved.

The exhibition is open daily from 11 am to 7 pm, and there are no admission fees, making it accessible to all. By hosting this event, Avenue K Shopping Mall continues to solidify its position as a hub of life, creativity, and social inclusion, demonstrating that the art of shopping can indeed be transformed into an art of living.
