KLP48, the latest addition to the international family of AKB48 idol groups, has officially introduced its first generation of members. This new Kuala Lumpur-based sister group of the famed Japanese idol ensemble AKB48 announced that their debut performance is set for the summer of 2024.
After an extensive audition process that saw thousands of hopefuls vying for a spot, the final 13-member lineup has been meticulously selected over three months of rigorous selection and training by 48 Entertainment Sdn Bhd. The Malaysian company, authorized by Superball Inc., the licensor for AKB48’s overseas sister groups, is managing KLP48. As the first all-girl idol group headquartered in Malaysia, KLP48 aims to emphasize international performances, adding a unique flavor to the AKB48 family.
Diverse lineup with international flair
The inaugural lineup of KLP48 includes seven Malaysians, one Indonesian, and one member from Hong Kong, China. The group also features three transfers from AKB48 and one from the Japan-based sister group STU48. Nariaki Terada, Chief Executive Officer of Superball Inc., expressed his excitement, stating, “Welcoming the first generation members of KLP48 is a thrilling moment that underscores the global appeal of AKB48 and its sister groups. We look forward to witnessing KLP48 unfold their journey as they take their first steps into the spotlight.”
KLP48 stands as the 10th AKB48 overseas sister group, joining the ranks of JKT48 (Jakarta), BNK48 (Bangkok), MNL48 (Manila), AKB48 Team SH (Shanghai), AKB48 Team TP (Taipei), and CGM48 (Chiang Mai). Yip Chun Huei, Director of 48 Entertainment Sdn Bhd, shared his optimism, “AKB48 and its sister groups have long enjoyed a widespread following in Malaysia, and we hope that fans will extend their fervent support to KLP48 as well. With exciting plans in the pipeline, the members have been working hard to showcase their very best, so stay tuned for what’s coming.”
First public performance
Adding to the excitement, KLP48 will make its first public appearance on August 18 at the AKB48 Group Live in KL 2024 First Cry concert. The event will also feature performances by AKB48, STU48, JKT48, and QUADLIPS, promising an electrifying experience for fans. KLP48 has been assigned the color green, inspired by Malaysian jade, symbolizing a gentle aura, empathy, and the blending of diverse values, marking their unique identity within the AKB48 family.
