Creators IRL initiative targets online safety and digital threats

Ministry of Communications, Meta, and CelcomDigi launch Creators IRL to equip content creators with tools to combat online scams and promote safety.

In a significant move to address the rising concerns of online safety and scams, a unique partnership between the Ministry of Communications, Meta Platforms, Inc., and CelcomDigi has led to the launch of the Creators IRL (In Real Life) programme.

This pioneering initiative aims to equip content creators in Malaysia with the tools, knowledge, and experience needed to combat online threats effectively. The programme was unveiled at an event that brought together over 30 of the country’s most influential content creators alongside key industry stakeholders, marking the beginning of a concerted effort to promote digital safety in the country.

Empowering content creators

The event featured a dynamic panel discussion with experts from Meta, CelcomDigi, and the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum). The panelists explored critical issues surrounding online scams and child online safety, offering valuable insights and strategies to protect users in the digital space. The event also included a hands-on content creation workshop led by REV Media, where participants received practical guidance on creating impactful content that addresses serious online safety issues while engaging audiences effectively.

“It’s essential for content creators not only to be aware of an issue but also to feel empowered to take meaningful action. Authenticity is key, especially with the brands they choose to promote,” said New Su Shern, Executive Director of Ratio, the social change impact agency executing this programme. She emphasized the importance of fostering behavioral change and empowerment among content creators to drive meaningful action in addressing online harms.

Creators IRL fellowship

At the heart of the Creators IRL programme is a transformative three-month fellowship designed for 10 selected content creators. These creators will receive in-depth training on cutting-edge content creation techniques that emphasize behavioral strategies and online safety. The fellowship includes real-world insights through visits to key organizations involved in the digital sphere, and opportunities to network with government officials, corporate leaders, and fellow content creators.

The programme also includes grant support totaling RM80,000, providing the selected creators with the financial resources needed to produce impactful content that drives change on online safety issues. Daniel Lim, Head of Public Policy at Meta Malaysia, expressed excitement about the programme, stating, “The Creators IRL programme represents a significant step forward in empowering content creators to not only understand the issues of online safety but to take active, meaningful steps to address them.”
