The Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS), with over 60 years of history, continues to be a pillar of support for the Hindu community in Malaysia.

Focused on promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, and social interests of Hindus, MHS has remained steadfast in its mission, particularly in Penang, where it plays a crucial role in community welfare, education, and empowerment.

Empowering Indian women in Penang

In Penang, the Malaysia Hindu Sangam has made significant strides in empowering Indian women through its Women Bureau.

This initiative provides a robust platform for women to grow, learn, and lead in various social services.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow praised these efforts, highlighting the bureau’s role in creating safe spaces for families, especially those facing domestic violence.

“The Women Bureau under MHS has taken significant steps to support and empower women in every aspect of their lives,” Chow stated during a recent event.

The Penang government recognises the vital role of MHS in advancing the development of Indian women and encourages further collaboration with local agencies such as the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC).

Chow believes that these partnerships will strengthen MHS’s efforts, offering comprehensive support to women in the community.

Youth development through education and leadership

Beyond its work with women, the Malaysia Hindu Sangam is also dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Indian leaders through its Youth Bureau.

This bureau focuses on providing education, training, and leadership opportunities to Indian youths, preparing them to face challenges and contribute to Malaysia’s progress.

“You are creating competent Indian youths who can elevate our country’s progress to a higher level,” said Chow, acknowledging the impact of MHS’s youth initiatives.

MHS’s emphasis on education is evident through its free religious and computer classes, as well as seminars designed to empower Indian students.

These efforts culminated in the recent Thirumurai recital programme held at SJK(T) Mak Mandin school hall in Butterworth.

The programme, which involved Indian students from various Penang schools, served as the final stage before participants compete at the national level.

Thirumurai, a form of Tamil music rooted in ancient holy verses, is not only a musical tradition but also a means of imparting religious knowledge.

The Malaysia Hindu Sangam’s work in Penang has been instrumental in advancing the development of both Indian youth and women.

Chow encourages continued engagement between MHS, the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), and PWDC, noting that these collaborations will be crucial in driving the society forward.

With leaders such as Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, Senator Dr R.A. Lingeshwaran, MHS president T. Ganesan, and Penang MHS chairman A. Tharman present at the Thirumurai recital programme, the event highlighted the collective commitment to the community’s growth.

As Malaysia Hindu Sangam continues its mission, its focus on education, empowerment, and collaboration will undoubtedly shape the future of the Hindu community in Penang and beyond.
