The National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) held a peaceful picket outside Maybank’s Bangsar branch from 6 PM to 7 PM, protesting against the bank’s alleged union-busting practices and mistreatment of workers. The hour-long demonstration saw NUBE members voicing their frustrations over unresolved grievances and the bank’s handling of serious employee complaints, particularly a sexual harassment case involving a female employee.
Nationwide Protests Sparked by Sexual Harassment Case
The protest in Bangsar is part of a nationwide series of pickets at Maybank branches, triggered by the case of a female employee from the bank’s Bercham, Ipoh branch, who was allegedly bullied, intimidated, and later suspended for filing a sexual harassment report against her male superior. NUBE has been at the forefront of these protests, demanding accountability from Maybank for failing to protect its workers.
According to NUBE Secretary-General J. Solomon, the harassment began in 2021 when the victim received inappropriate messages and photos from her superior. Despite lodging multiple complaints, the bank allegedly took no meaningful action, merely instructing the superior to cease his behavior. The situation worsened after the victim filed a police report on August 16. Maybank subsequently summoned her for an investigative interview on August 20, which she declined to attend, requesting union involvement. She was then suspended for “insubordination” and placed on half pay.
Accusations of Suppression and Failure to Act
NUBE’s grievances extend beyond this specific case, with the union accusing Maybank of fostering a culture that allows such issues to fester. The union alleges that instead of taking appropriate action against the superior, the bank shifted its focus to investigating the victim, a move NUBE views as an attempt to silence her. Solomon highlighted that the harassment and bullying had been ongoing since May 2021, yet the bank’s response remained inadequate.
“This picket has been going on for more than a month. The reason for this picket is because Maybank is using public funds and public authorities to suppress and oppress workers. Maybank is exploiting poor workers while promoting sexual harassment and racism,” Solomon said during the protest.
Broader Workers’ Rights Campaign
The Bangsar picket and similar protests across five states in Malaysia form part of NUBE’s broader campaign to address systemic issues within the banking sector. Union members are pushing for improved protections and transparency when handling workplace grievances. NUBE accuses Maybank of prioritizing its own interests over the well-being of its employees, particularly those facing serious workplace harassment.
Maybank recently issued a statement denying the allegations of unfair treatment and harassment raised by NUBE. However, the union remains resolute, with Solomon reiterating that NUBE will continue its protests until justice is served for the Bercham employee and other workers facing similar struggles.
