The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) continues its mission to empower Malaysians through the digital economy with its latest initiative, the 78th Saya Digital Tour (JSD) in Kuching.

The two-day event, held at Plaza Merdeka from 7 to 8 September, drew around 2,500 visitors and was supported by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).

This initiative, aligned with the Ministry of Digital’s focus areas—Digital Government, Digital Economy, and Digital Society—aims to equip Malaysians with vital digital skills to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

By organising the JSD event, MDEC reaffirms its commitment to promoting digital literacy and helping citizens manage rising living costs through smarter technology solutions.

The Saya Digital campaign, launched in 2020, continues to serve as a key platform for enhancing digital competencies across Malaysia.

Empowering citizens through digital skills

At the core of the Saya Digital Tour are four main pillars: Digital Literacy, Digital Business, Digital Freelance, and Digital Careers.

These pillars target groups such as the B40 community, unemployed graduates, senior citizens, persons with disabilities (OKU), students, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

By reaching out to these groups, MDEC plays a crucial role in advancing the country’s digital economy.

This year, MDEC aims to attract 40,000 participants across 31 locations nationwide.

The successful response highlights the growing importance of digital literacy and economic participation in the modern economy.

Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Chairman of MDEC, highlighted the significance of the JSD tour, saying, “Our goal is to equip Malaysians with the necessary digital skills to not only survive but thrive in a fast-changing digital world.

The response we’ve seen so far proves that these initiatives are making a difference.”

MDEC’s ongoing digital initiatives

In addition to the Saya Digital Tour, MDEC has launched several other impactful initiatives.

The eUsahawan program has provided training to 564,629 students from higher learning institutions, TVET students, and entrepreneurs nationwide, generating over RM1.26 billion in accumulated sales.

This includes 34,104 entrepreneurs from Sarawak, who collectively earned more than RM51.63 million.

Another initiative, the MyDigitalMaker program, has reached over 2.5 million school students, introducing them to digital-making activities and boosting their digital knowledge.

At JSD Kuching, numerous interactive activities were held to engage the younger generation.

Local entrepreneurs were also treated to a session on Artificial Intelligence (AI) trends in business, offering them valuable insights into how AI can transform their operations.

Datuk Wilson Ugak Anak Kumbong, Deputy Minister of Digital, officially launched the JSD tour in Kuching alongside other dignitaries.

He expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, noting, “Programs like Saya Digital are critical for Sarawak’s journey towards becoming a digital economy powerhouse.

I’m encouraged to see such strong participation from the local community.”

The success of JSD Kuching would not have been possible without the support of strategic partners like Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Social Security Organization (SOCSO), TM-Unifi Business, MIMOS Berhad (MyDigital ID), and SPay Global.

Each partner played a significant role, conducting sharing sessions and contributing to the event’s wide range of knowledge-enhancing activities.

MDEC’s continued efforts in driving digital adoption across Malaysia, especially in underserved communities, underscore its pivotal role in shaping the future of the country’s digital economy.

With the success of JSD Kuching, the agency is set to achieve its 2024 target, ensuring that more Malaysians can participate in and benefit from the country’s digital transformation.
