Ipoh’s innovative approach, known as the Ipoh Doughnut Economy, has been honoured with the UN-Habitat Honorary Survey Award 2024.
This recognition underscores the city’s commitment to sustainable development, placing Ipoh on the global stage for its transformative efforts in urban planning.
Doughnut Economy: A revolutionary urban model
Launched in March 2023, the Ipoh Doughnut Economy Programme is grounded in the nine DEAL principles, which focus on integrating economic, social, and environmental factors to create a balanced, sustainable city.
This initiative, supported by Yayasan Hasanah, has seen collaboration between Sunway University Planetary Health Centre (SCPH), Darul Ridzuan Institute (IDR), People of Remarkable Talent (PORT), and the Ipoh City Council (MBI).
“The significance of this achievement lies not only in the award itself but in the recognition of our joint commitment to transforming Ipoh into a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient city,” said Ipoh Mayor Dato’ Haji Rumaizi.
“It reflects the strong impact of implementing the Doughnut Economy model, which integrates economic, social, and environmental dimensions for balanced development.”
The award will be presented at the “Beyond the 2030 Agenda” event in Queretaro, Mexico, from 8-10 October 2024.
Rumaizi and iDEC CEO Dr. Zulqarnain are set to receive the honour on behalf of the project.
Strengthening sustainable urban development
The Ipoh Doughnut Economy initiative aims to foster a regenerative urban environment by adhering to ecological boundaries while enhancing community well-being.
“Our work demonstrates how cities, guided by innovative frameworks, can thrive within ecological limits while boosting community health,” added Rumaizi.
Sunway University, a key knowledge partner in this project, has been instrumental in supporting the initiative.
Prof Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood of Sunway University noted, “This achievement reflects Sunway University’s ongoing commitment to planetary health and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing our dedication to sustainable solutions and nurturing responsible global citizens.”
The Mayor also extended his gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim, Chief Minister of Perak Dato’ Seri Saarani Bin Mohamad, and Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming for their invaluable support.
Their contributions have been pivotal in advancing the Ipoh Doughnut Economy initiative and ensuring its success.
Aligned with FLAGSHIP 15 of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan, MBI aims to position Ipoh as a leading example of regenerative and sustainable urban development in Malaysia and ASEAN.
“We are committed to enhancing collaboration with stakeholders to build a resilient, healthy, and sustainable Ipoh,” said the Mayor.
The Ipoh Doughnut Economy is not just a model for local improvement but a beacon for other cities striving towards similar sustainability goals.
As Ipoh continues to lead by example, it invites others to follow in adopting innovative urban development strategies that ensure a healthier, more inclusive future.
