Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the launch of Malaysia’s first sustainable rest and service (R&R) area at the Seremban southbound stop on the North-South Expressway, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.
The newly redeveloped Seremban R&R incorporates a range of green technologies, positioning it as a model for future highway facilities across the nation.
“I have travelled this highway for decades, and I have never seen an R&R as impressive and sustainable as this one.
The people of Seremban and Negeri Sembilan are fortunate to have such a facility; it is a great start for both traders and the community,” said Anwar during the launch.
Anwar :A new era in sustainable highway facilities
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of sustainable infrastructure, noting that the development of the Seremban R&R reflects a growing commitment to eco-friendly solutions.
The R&R features solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting for public facilities, and natural ventilation in its surau, setting a new standard for highway rest areas.
“What is notable is the use of solar energy and rainwater for facilities like bathrooms and toilets.
I stress that the Seremban southbound R&R should be viewed as a model for all highways in Malaysia and an example to follow,” Anwar added, emphasising the need for sustainable practices to be adopted nationwide.
The RM45 million redevelopment project, which secured a Green Building Index (GBI) Gold Rating, incorporates sustainable building materials and state-of-the-art green technologies. It is the first R&R in the country to feature electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, waste composting machines, and fabric recycling bins.
A step towards greener highways
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi also praised the initiative, expressing his hope that the sustainable R&R concept will be expanded to other locations across the country.
“I encourage highway concessionaires to collaborate on expanding this concept as it enhances public comfort,” he said.
The R&R area, located at KM274.6 between the Nilai Interchange and Bandar Ainsdale Interchange, has been designed to meet the growing needs of highway users while prioritising environmental sustainability.
In addition to green technologies, the facility offers significant improvements to its public spaces, including a food court nearly eight times larger than its predecessor, accommodating over 500 visitors.
The surau has also been upgraded to provide greater comfort for worshippers, with space for up to 150 men and 150 women.
The redesign features natural ventilation, creating a more pleasant and eco-friendly environment.
Anwar highlighted the broader significance of the Seremban R&R, stressing that it is a prime example of how infrastructure development can address public needs while embracing sustainable practices.
“This fantastic facility is unique to Seremban. If we are committed to innovation and sustainability, we can elevate our country to greater heights,” he said.
He further expressed gratitude to key government officials, including the Prime Minister, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming, for their support in advancing the sustainable highway R&R initiative.
The success of the Seremban southbound R&R, Anwar said, should serve as a template for future highway infrastructure projects, encouraging other regions to adopt similar green innovations.
