IJN highlights heart health for World Heart Day 2024

Join IJN in World Heart Day 2024 campaign to raise awareness on heart health, cholesterol management, and proactive care, with a week-long event in Shah Alam.

In celebration of World Heart Day, the Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) hosted a public forum titled “30s and Thriving: Prioritise Heart Health Early.”

This event, held in conjunction with the global awareness day observed on 29 September, focused on the rising cardiovascular health risks faced by younger adults, particularly those in their 30s and 40s.

The forum, part of IJN’s broader World Heart Day 2024 campaign themed “Neon Sparks, Healthy Heart Embarks,” featured a panel of IJN experts including a cardiologist, physiotherapist, and dietitian, alongside a special guest, influencer Ili Sulaiman, who shared her personal experience with heart disease.

IJN’s Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib, emphasised the institute’s commitment to improving heart health across Malaysia.

“At IJN, we are dedicated to providing exceptional cardiovascular care and bridging the gap between the public and healthcare.

Today’s forum reflects our mission to instil a sense of urgency, particularly among younger adults, to take charge of their heart health through regular screenings,” he said.

The event focused on critical heart health topics, such as understanding cholesterol levels and risk factors associated with heart disease.

Senior Consultant Cardiologist Datuk Dr Ahmad Khairuddin highlighted the alarming rise in high cholesterol levels among young Malaysians.

“According to the National Health & Morbidity Survey 2023, 7.6 million adults in Malaysia have high cholesterol.

This issue increasingly affects individuals aged 25-29, putting them at higher risk of sudden heart attacks and strokes,” he stated.

Personal stories and practical heart health tips

A particularly poignant moment came from Ili Sulaiman, a popular chef and influencer, who shared her experience of suffering a heart attack at just 38 years old.

“There were warning signs—like frequent inflammation and high stress—that I ignored. Now, as a mother and wife, I prioritise my health to be there for my family.

I urge everyone in their 30s to get checked for high cholesterol and take care of their hearts,” she advised.

The forum also featured practical advice from IJN experts. Physiotherapist Sarjit Singh Jahal stressed the importance of regular physical activity to manage cholesterol and reduce stress.

Meanwhile, Senior Principal Dietitian Foong Pui Hing provided insights into heart-friendly foods, including oily fish, vegetable oils, fruits, and vegetables, all of which can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

As part of its efforts for World Heart Day 2024, IJN has partnered with AstraZeneca and will host a week-long campaign at AEON Shah Alam from 24th to 29th September.

The event will feature interactive activities, educational booths, exclusive heart screening packages, and even a wholesome meal cooking challenge to promote heart-healthy diets.

In addition, IJN First pharmacy will offer special deals on heart-related products and services, encouraging the public to take proactive steps toward better heart health.

The IJN’s World Heart Day activities aim to empower Malaysians, especially young adults, to prioritise heart health.

With rising rates of high cholesterol and heart disease, IJN’s efforts underscore the importance of regular check-ups and a heart-healthy lifestyle.
