The Maths and Languages Mastery Competition 2024 (MEMC24) showcased the academic brilliance of 700 students from 87 schools across Penang.
Organised by Penang Math Platform and Bright Robin, MEMC24 tested the arithmetic and linguistic skills of participants from Year 1 to Year 6, making it a major highlight in Penang’s academic calendar.
The competition, now in its second year, serves as a platform for students to excel in mathematics and language, with a focus on developing critical thinking and language proficiency in both Bahasa Melayu and English.
Approximately 15% of the participants, or 108 students, advanced to the Grand Final after excelling in the online Qualifying Round held on August 24.
Promoting holistic learning at MEMC24
MEMC24 goes beyond just competition; it’s an educational resource for teachers and parents alike.
Johnny Ong, General Manager of Penang Math Platform, emphasised its value, saying, “For teachers and parents, MEMC acts as a valuable resource, providing insights into their children’s performance in mathematics and languages.
This enables parents to better understand their children’s academic strengths and areas for improvement, fostering a collaborative approach between educators, students, and parents.”
The competition offers six categories, aligned with students’ school years.
The top three winners in each category were awarded cash prizes: RM200 for first place, RM100 for second place, and RM50 for third place. SJKC Chong Cheng stood out, earning the Highest Number of Finalists award, along with a RM1,000 cash prize.
Growing interest in Maths and language skills
Zairil Khir Johari, Penang’s Exco for Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital, officiated the Grand Final, held at the TAR UMT Penang branch on September 21.
He praised the event, noting the increasing enthusiasm for interdisciplinary learning.
“The success of this year’s competition highlights the growing interest in interdisciplinary learning, as students are encouraged to develop both Maths and language skills,” Zairil said.
Zairil also applauded the efforts of Penang Math Platform and Bright Robin in nurturing young talent and fostering a love for learning.
He added, “We are looking forward to seeing more events like this that inspire students’ interest in Maths and STEM, helping to build a workforce ready for the high-tech industry, positioning Penang as the Number 1 manufacturing hub for AI and advanced chip making.”
Building on the success of MEMC24, the organisers are already looking towards the future. Plans for next year’s competition include expanding participation and introducing new challenges to further test students’ abilities in Maths and languages.
Since its establishment in 2017, Penang Math Platform has played a pivotal role in improving Maths and English education across the state.
Bright Robin, which was founded in 2009, continues to develop interactive learning content, operating over 30 learning centres in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and the UAE.
