Tourism Malaysia, along with representatives from Batik Air and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), celebrated the arrival of Batik Air’s inaugural flights from Krabi and Hat Yai, Thailand, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 on September 20. The two flights, OD587 from Krabi and OD589 from Hat Yai, landed at 1540 hrs and 1725 hrs, respectively, carrying a total of 260 passengers. The launch of these routes is seen as a significant step towards boosting tourism between the neighbouring countries and expanding Batik Air’s presence in Thailand.
These new daily routes, operated using Airbus A320 aircraft, complement Batik Air’s existing services from Bangkok and Phuket, further enhancing the accessibility of second-tier cities in Thailand to Malaysia. This expansion aligns with Malaysia’s strategic goals of attracting more international visitors, particularly from key markets such as Thailand.
A Milestone in Strengthening Tourism Ties
The addition of Krabi and Hat Yai to Batik Air’s flight network reflects the strong collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and the airline. With Thailand identified as one of Malaysia’s key tourism markets, this new connection offers more direct access to Malaysian destinations for Thai travellers. Malaysia has long been a favourite destination for Thai tourists, and these new routes are expected to further fuel the influx of visitors from Thailand.
The collaboration also supports the ambitious goals of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which aims to attract 35.6 million international tourist arrivals and generate RM147.1 billion in tourism revenue. The availability of daily flights from Krabi and Hat Yai not only increases connectivity but also presents opportunities for more cultural exchanges and tourism development between the two countries.
Expanding Opportunities for Tourists
With these direct flights, travellers from Krabi and Hat Yai now have easier access to explore Malaysia’s diverse tourism offerings, ranging from the vibrant cityscape of Kuala Lumpur with its iconic Petronas Twin Towers, to the serene beaches of Langkawi and the historic charm of Melaka. These connections will allow Thai tourists to immerse themselves in Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, famous culinary experiences, and various historical landmarks.
Tourism Malaysia remains committed to enhancing its marketing efforts to attract more Thai tourists, highlighting Malaysia’s vast attractions and seamless travel experiences. The strategic partnerships with airlines like Batik Air underscore the country’s dedication to making Malaysia a premier destination for international travellers.
Strategic Growth Towards Visit Malaysia 2026
In addition to welcoming these new routes, Tourism Malaysia is focused on strengthening its presence in key tourism markets. Beyond Thailand, the country’s efforts are targeted at other key markets such as China, India, Indonesia, and Australia. By working closely with domestic and international airlines, including Batik Air, Malaysia aims to boost tourism traffic, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between the airline industry and the tourism sector.
As the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign picks up momentum, initiatives like the direct flights from Krabi and Hat Yai represent a pivotal part of achieving the nation’s long-term tourism targets. Malaysia’s vibrant mix of attractions, alongside strengthened connectivity, is expected to draw an increasing number of tourists, contributing to the growth of the country’s tourism sector.
