In a groundbreaking move to elevate media education in Southeast Asia, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Oceanus Media Global (OMG).
This partnership aims to integrate cutting-edge virtual production (VP) technologies into APU’s curriculum, preparing students to lead the future of content creation.
With the increasing demand for advanced digital content in Southeast Asia, this collaboration allows APU to offer students practical, hands-on experience with state-of-the-art VP technologies.
The initiative focuses on real-time rendering and immersive environments, setting the stage for a new generation of media professionals.
A game-changing partnership for APU
Virtual production is swiftly transforming the media and filmmaking landscape, and APU’s partnership with OMG puts the university at the forefront of this change.
According to Nick GC Tan, CEO of OMG, “By combining our expertise in generative AI and virtual production with APU’s academic excellence, we’re creating a new generation of media professionals who will lead the future of content creation.”
The collaboration will focus on three core initiatives:
- Train the Trainer Programme
Aimed at upskilling educators, this programme will ensure APU lecturers are equipped to teach the latest VP technologies. Supported by OMG’s brain bar team and VP supervisors, this initiative will provide the tools needed to prepare students for the evolving media industry. - Masterclasses and Workshops
OMG’s industry experts will lead intensive sessions that bridge the gap between education and real-world VP workflows. These masterclasses will provide students with deep insights into the advanced technologies shaping today’s media landscape. - Exchange Programmes and Work Experience Trips
Students will have the opportunity to visit leading VP studios, such as the Iskandar Malaysia Studio (IMS) in Johor and OMG’s studio in Singapore. These experiences will expose them to industry-standard technologies, workflows, and professional networks.
APU’s vision for the future of media education
Debbie Liew, Head of APU’s School of Media Arts and Design, highlighted the significance of virtual production in shaping the future of media.
“Virtual production represents the next significant technological leap in the filmmaking industry, akin to the transformative shift from analogue to digital filming.
To navigate this inevitable change, we must empower our students by providing them with every opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals.”
The collaboration aligns with APU’s mission to create industry-ready graduates.
Professor Dr Vinesh Thiruchelvam, APU’s Chief Innovation & Enterprise Officer, emphasised, “This partnership signifies a leap forward for APU in shaping the future of media education in Southeast Asia.
By merging cutting-edge virtual production technologies with our academic framework, we are equipping our students with the skills to thrive in the global media landscape and drive innovation in the content creation industry.”
Scheduled to commence in October 2024, this partnership not only aims to enhance media education but also create a strong ecosystem connecting academia, industry, and government bodies.
This initiative is expected to boost job placement opportunities for graduates and elevate Southeast Asia as a hub for VP innovation.
The MOU signing took place on 1st October during the Malaysia Digital Content Festival (MYDCF) 2024, a flagship event organised by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).
The festival showcased numerous digital content initiatives, further highlighting the growing importance of the media and creative tech sectors in the region.
This partnership promises to make APU a leader in media education while providing OMG with the opportunity to nurture future content creators.
As the world of digital content evolves, collaborations like these ensure students are well-equipped to shape the future of media.
