The Piala Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang 2024 concluded with Belleview emerging victorious, securing the prestigious title and a cash prize of RM5,000.
Held for the second consecutive year, this tournament, organised to promote community engagement and sporting excellence, saw Belleview dominate the finals, defeating Rocket in the men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles categories.
The grand finale brought together the best teams from previous rounds, including the Piala Penang2030 and Piala LovePenang, with both finalists—Belleview and Rocket—displaying exceptional skills and determination.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in his speech during the closing gala, praised the teams for their participation and emphasised the importance of such tournaments in fostering unity and active lifestyles in Penang.
Rockets take second place with honour
While Belleview claimed the top spot, Rocket, the runner-up, did not walk away empty-handed. The team secured RM2,000 along with a trophy and medals.
Their strong performance throughout the tournament was commendable, especially in the earlier rounds where they clinched victories that led them to the grand finals.
Both Belleview and Rocket had earned their spots by winning the Piala Penang2030 and Piala LovePenang tournaments.
These rounds, held on both the island and mainland on October 12 and 13, saw Belleview and Rocket triumph over other strong contenders, each taking home RM5,000, a trophy, and medals for their players.
The tournament attracted 21 teams this year, a significant increase from last year’s 16 teams.
The surge in participation is a testament to the growing popularity of badminton in the region, with more teams eager to showcase their talents on the court.
Chief Minister’s vision for Penang’s sporting future
In his address, Chow highlighted the deeper significance of the Piala Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang.
He spoke about its role in bringing people together, fostering community ties, and nurturing a fighting spirit in all participants.
Chow expressed his hopes for the tournament to inspire future sports stars from Penang, following in the footsteps of greats like Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Chan Peng Soon, Lim Khim Wah, and Ong Ewe Hock.
“I believe this tournament is not only about competition but also about building relationships and creating a more active, united community,” Chow said during the gala dinner held at Lee Sih Chong Soo, Jalan Burma, in George Town.
The Piala Penang2030 saw Penang Forward Sports Club A finish as runners-up, with Badminators and G Lead sharing third place.
The Piala LovePenang had Le Vacation securing second, while Penang Forward Sports Club B and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) tied for third.
The event closed with a celebratory dinner where participants enjoyed a sumptuous meal and the chance to win exciting lucky draw prizes.
From badminton racquets to motorcycles, the lucky draws added a touch of fun to the evening, further enhancing the sense of camaraderie that defined the entire tournament.
Also in attendance were notable figures such as Chow’s senior confidential secretary Mohd Balkish Othman, political secretary Lau Keng Ee,
Penang State Sports Council director Harry Chai Heng Hua, and Penang Forward Sports Club chairman Lim Choo Hooi.
