APU student wins big with wonderland-inspired chair

In a remarkable achievement, Ong Jing Rou, a 19-year-old Industrial Design student from Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), has won her second major award in two months.

Ong received the Platinum Award in the student category at the KL Selangor Furniture Association (KSFA) Golden Axe Award 2024, showcasing her unique talent and solidifying her as a standout in Malaysia’s design industry.

A wonderland-inspired creation

Ong’s winning piece, Frame-Alice’s Chair, took inspiration from Alice in Wonderland with a vibrant colour scheme influenced by the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The chair’s playful, circular design and precise metalwork impressed the judges, making it the top choice among 40 entries.

“The whimsical nature of Alice in Wonderland provided a playful foundation, while the Paris Olympics inspired my colour selection,” Ong shared.

“Balancing creativity and modern luxury made the design truly stand out.”

Her award was presented at KSFA’s 68th-anniversary event on October 19, along with a RM1,000 cash prize.

The judging panel included Dr Eric Leong and Walter Tan, two respected figures in Malaysia’s furniture design competitions.

APU: Rising talent with strong mentorship

Ong’s latest award comes shortly after her first-place finish at the 2024 MIIP Interior Industry Awards, where she won another Platinum Award with her Frame-Coffer Chair design.

She credits her success to the mentorship of Eekang Ooi, a Certified Industrial Designer (CIDe) and lecturer at APU’s School of Media, Arts and Design (SoMAD).

“Winning two championships so close together is incredibly rewarding. I owe so much to my mentor, Eekang Ooi,” Ong said.

Ooi praised Ong’s creativity and dedication, saying, “The Frame-Alice’s Chair design shows sophistication in both concept and execution.

The technical detailing is so precise it’s ready for production, and we are currently in talks with manufacturers to showcase this piece in a future exhibition.”

Debbie Liew, Head of SoMAD, noted that Ong’s achievements reflect APU’s strong design curriculum and industry connections.

“Our faculty members have diverse industry backgrounds, ensuring students like Jing Rou gain the skills needed to excel.

This win highlights both her immense talent and APU’s commitment to fostering the next generation of designers.”
