Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark named Selangor’s first

The Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark is now Selangor’s first national geopark, aiming for UNESCO recognition while boosting sustainable tourism.

The Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark has been officially declared Selangor’s first national geopark, marking a milestone in preserving the state’s natural heritage.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor officiated the proclamation ceremony, solidifying the 112,955-hectare site as a key player in Malaysia’s geotourism and environmental sustainability efforts.

The geopark spans the Gombak and Hulu Langat districts, showcasing 31 geosites, including 20 eco-tourism and geo-tourism attractions.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad expressed optimism for the geopark’s progression towards UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) recognition,

A sustainable tourism vision for geopark

The Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark is part of Selangor’s broader push for sustainable tourism and community engagement.

With Tourism Selangor leading the initiative, local governments and agencies such as PLAN Malaysia, the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG), and municipal councils from Kajang, Ampang Jaya, and Selayang have joined forces to preserve the area’s geological and ecological integrity.

The geopark aligns with global goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 15 (Life on Land) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

By balancing economic development with environmental conservation, the project aims to benefit local communities while protecting biodiversity.

Kajang Municipal Council President highlighted plans to develop eco-friendly infrastructure and engage local businesses, such as Perusahaan Kasih Hulu Langat and APA Attitude Planet Art, in creating a thriving geotourism sector.

“Our focus is on building a sustainable tourism model that benefits everyone—from artists to tour guides—while safeguarding the environment,” he said.

Aiming for UNESCO Recognition by 2028

As Malaysia’s seventh national geopark, Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark joins an esteemed list that includes Langkawi and Kinabalu, both of which have attained UNESCO Global Geopark status.

Selangor aims to secure similar recognition by 2028 by meeting stringent international standards in preserving the site’s natural landscapes.

Visitors can explore the park’s rich geological and cultural features while participating in activities such as rock climbing, tree climbing, and eco-tours.

The Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark’s declaration marks a proud moment for Selangor and its residents.

With partnerships across government, community groups, and local businesses, the initiative is set to create economic opportunities while preserving the state’s natural beauty.

As Selangor looks to the future, its commitment to sustainable tourism and global recognition promises to place the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark on the world map.
