Immersio 2024 has officially launched, bringing an awe-inspiring celebration of new media art to GMBB, Kuala Lumpur, from 22 November to 22 December 2024.
The festival, led by renowned collective Filamen, merges technology and creativity to spotlight Southeast Asia’s rich cultural heritage through a theme aptly titled Maya—meaning illusion, magic, and virtual.
With over 50 digital artworks and installations from 32 artists across the region, Immersio 2024 offers an immersive three-part experience, redefining storytelling in the digital age.
A spectacle of art and technology
The Maya Exhibition, curated by Koh Kai Ting, forms the festival’s heart, presenting a journey through four thematic lenses: Chronopolitics, Quest, Diaspora, and Symbiosis.
Each framework explores the intricate balance between tradition and technology.
Featured artists include Arrvin Raj, Suzy Sulaiman, and international contributors such as Japan’s Kinnara: Desi La and Thailand’s Pavee.
These works provoke thought and reimagine Southeast Asia’s social and cultural landscapes.
Beyond the exhibition, Malaysia and Southeast Asia Collectives amplifies regional voices, with 10 curated spaces showcasing collectives like Kapallorek (Perak), Mud Layar (Selangor), and 084Visual (Vietnam).
Each brings a unique interpretation of Maya, demonstrating how cultural futurism evolves through creative technology.
Immersio nurturing future talent
A dedicated section, iNYALA, celebrates emerging artists from institutions like The One Academy and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
This platform highlights fresh perspectives and experimental ideas, solidifying Immersio’s commitment to cultivating future leaders in new media art.
Co-founder Abdul Shakir reflected on the festival’s evolution: “Immersio is about breaking boundaries and creating a space where creativity flourishes.
This year’s expanded vision unites regional artists and technologists while embracing our local roots.”
